Planning a patio, a paver walkway or a new driveway pad? Michigan Rock Supply handles gravel and aggregate delivery in East China, MI, and the material most local crews start with is 21AA limestone. It packs hard under pavers and flatwork.

This is flat, former glacial lake bed ground. Clay holds water, so the base you build on matters as much as the pavers on top.

Materials for East China Projects

Bedding and base choice decides whether a patio stays flat. Under pavers you want a compacted, well-graded base that drains and locks, then a thin bedding layer that screeds smooth and does not shift underfoot.

Stone Screenings are the standard bedding layer here. Screed them about an inch thick over a compacted base, set the pavers, then sweep more screenings into the joints. They bind without turning to mud.

Below the bedding, build with 21AA Limestone. It is the Michigan driveway base. Compacted in lifts, it forms the hard, stable layer your pavers sit on.

For sand-set joints and mortar work, Mason Sand is the fine, consistent choice. Use Washed Sand for leveling and bedding under slabs, where you want clean, free-draining material rather than fines.

A few more that fit the same jobs:

  • 3/8" Crushed Stone for a fine top dressing over a compacted base.
  • #57 Stone for a drainage layer beneath a patio or French drain.
  • Drain Rock for French drains and downspout runs in slow-draining clay.

Ground and Conditions in East China

Start with the failure you see here: a base that is too thin ruts and heaves after one thaw. This is Southeast lake plain ground, flat clay and silty clay over much of the area, and it is poorly drained.

Water stands in low spots and the soil stays soaked. Frost goes down 42 inches under the Michigan Residential Code, and as it comes out, trapped water softens thin bases. That is why a patio base here gets built thicker than the minimum and compacted in shallow lifts.

Spring snowmelt and heavy rain run off flat ground into ditches and tile drains. Streams and ditches on the lake plain rise fast and scour their banks, and shoreline ice and storms work at the lake edge. For patio and flatwork jobs, plan a drainage layer so water has somewhere to go.

Base, driveway and paver work runs from the spring thaw into late fall. Frost laws limit heavy trucks on many roads during the thaw, so time your delivery around it.

Delivery to East China and the Surrounding Area

Order online, and think about quantity in tons or cubic yards. Bulk material is sold by weight, so a ton of screenings covers less area than a ton of larger stone because the fine material is denser.

Estimate from area and depth. Multiply length by width by the depth you want, then convert. A thicker base under pavers means more tons, so measure the compacted depth, not the loose pile.

We deliver bulk to sites in East China and St. Clair County, including Port Huron, Fort Gratiot, Marysville, St. Clair and Algonac. Tell us where the truck can drop the load so it lands close to the work.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about gravel and aggregate delivery in East China, MI

What gravel is best for a driveway in East China?

21AA limestone is the standard Michigan driveway base, and it is what most local crews use. Top it with driveway gravel for the surface, or use 22A road gravel for a hard-packing unpaved drive. Avoid 22A where you need drainage.

How much material will my project need?

Work out the area, then the depth, then convert to tons or cubic yards. A patio base runs thicker than a walkway, and screenings for bedding go on thin. Measure the compacted depth you want, and add a little for settling and waste. Our online calculator turns your measurements into a quantity.

What happens if the weather turns?

We would rather move a delivery than tear up your ground. If the site is too wet for the truck on the day, we will call you and rebook. Tell us in advance about any part of the approach that does not drain and we will plan around it.
