Michigan Rock Supply provides bulk gravel and aggregate delivery across Michigan, and the material most Michigan jobs start with is 21AA limestone. It is a crushed limestone with fines, and it is the standard driveway, parking pad and pole barn base here. On the flat clay lake plain that runs through Southeast Michigan and around Saginaw Bay, water stands after snowmelt and heavy rain, so what goes under a drive matters as much as what goes on top.

Those are the terms to use when you order. Class 21AA is the dense-graded crushed aggregate used as driveway and road base. Class 22A is a dense-graded aggregate with a smaller top size, used as road gravel on unpaved drives and roads and as base.

21AA Limestone is the one to start with for a driveway, parking pad, pole barn or shed base. 22A Road Gravel is a hard-packing mix of stone, sand and fines for unpaved drives and private roads, and it is not for drainage work. Driveway Gravel surfaces an existing drive or tops a compacted 21AA base.

Above those bases, the stone sizes run coarsest to finest. #4 Crushed Stone handles heavy drainage, construction entrances and trench bottoms. #57 Stone covers drainage, French drains and concrete aggregate. #67 Stone does the same work at a slightly smaller size. 3/4" Crushed Stone is the all-purpose size for drainage beds, drive surfacing and construction entrances, and 3/8" Crushed Stone is for fine drainage, pipe bedding and topping over a compacted base. Drain Rock is for French drains, drywells, foundation drains and downspout runs, including in slow-draining clay ground.

For finishing work, Stone Screenings bed pavers, flagstone and patios. Walkway Gravel gives paths a finer, walkable surface. Pea Stone, which Michigan suppliers usually list under that name rather than Natural Pea Gravel, suits walkways, play areas, dog runs and drainage. River Rock fills decorative beds, borders and dry creek beds, and Large River Rock takes on dry creek beds and heavier erosion work. RipRap armors lakefront, stream banks, culvert outlets and slopes against waves, ice and spring runoff.

Sand, soil and mulch round out a load. Mason Sand is for brick and block work, paver joints and play sand. Washed Sand levels and beds under slabs. Top Soil is screened for new lawns and beds over sandy or clay glacial soils. Garden Soil fills raised beds and planting areas, Fill Dirt raises low ground before a 21AA base goes down, and Shredded Mulch holds moisture in beds and tree rings through the summer.

Ground and Climate Across Michigan

Michigan ground changes a lot from one region to the next. The Southeast lake plain, Saginaw Bay and the Thumb sit on a flat former glacial lake bed of clay, silty clay and clay loam, crossed in places by sandy beach ridges, low dunes and sand channels, and most of that ground is poorly drained.

Southwest and West Michigan are mostly sandy ground, with sand and gravel outwash plains, sandy moraines, and beach and dune sand near Lake Michigan. Northwest Michigan and the rest of the Northern Lower Peninsula are mostly sandy glacial outwash plains and sandy to loamy moraines, with swamps and wet lowlands, dune sand along parts of the Lake Michigan shore, and thin soils over limestone with sinkholes in places in parts of the northeast.

The Upper Peninsula splits in two. The eastern and central U.P.

That ground drives drainage decisions. Snowmelt and heavy rain stand on the clay lake plains and till flats, drain quickly through the sandy west and north, and collect in the swamps and rocky low spots of the Upper Peninsula, where lake-effect snow is heaviest.

Timing matters too. Work runs from the spring thaw into fall everywhere, but the season is shorter and frost laws can last longer in the Northern Lower Peninsula and the Upper Peninsula than in southern Michigan. The Michigan Residential Code sets footings at 42 inches statewide, and the building official can require deeper footings where local conditions such as colder winters call for it, which matters most in the north and the Upper Peninsula.

Michigan Rock Supply delivers bulk material across the state. Loads go to Wayne County, Oakland County, Macomb County, Kent County, Genesee County, Washtenaw County, Ottawa County, Ingham County, Kalamazoo County, Livingston County, Saginaw County and Muskegon County, along with the surrounding communities in each region.

Ordering is handled online. Choose your material, then choose a quantity by the ton or by the yard.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about gravel and aggregate delivery in Michigan

What is the best base material for a patio in Michigan?

21AA limestone is the standard base for a patio in Michigan. It is a dense-graded crushed limestone with fines, and it compacts into a firm, stable surface. On the clay lake plains of the southeast and around Saginaw Bay, where water stands after snowmelt and heavy rain, a compacted 21AA base is what keeps a patio from shifting.

Can I order material for a commercial or contractor job?

Yes. Michigan Rock Supply delivers bulk gravel, stone, sand, topsoil and fill to commercial and contractor sites across Michigan, from subdivision work in Southeast Michigan to farm lanes and shoreline projects in the north.

When is the best time of year to order base material in Michigan?

Work runs from the spring thaw into fall across the state. In southern Michigan that window is long, while the season is shorter and frost laws can last longer in the Northern Lower Peninsula and the Upper Peninsula. Order when the ground is workable and you can get equipment onto the site. If you are building near a footing, remember the Michigan Residential Code sets footings at 42 inches statewide, and the building official can require deeper footings where local conditions call for it.
