21AA Limestone for Michigan Drives, Pads and Lanes

Nearly every load of 21AA limestone that leaves on a truck in this state is going under something a plow blade will scrape all winter: a turnaround at the end of a two-track, a pad where a boat sits from October to May, the soft two hundred feet of a farm lane that pallets and scrap asphalt never fixed. That is the job it gets ordered for here, and the reason sits under the ground rather than on it. Frost reaches 42 inches under the Michigan Residential Code, and when it comes back out in March the soil below a drive is saturated and weak. A base laid thin or laid loose shows up as ruts by the second week of April.

Order 21AA limestone when something heavy has to sit on it all winter

The material is a 3/4 inch minus, dense-graded mix of crushed stone, gravel and binding fines, and those fines are the whole point. Dampened and rolled, the small stuff wedges into the gaps between the larger pieces and the layer sets up as one slab instead of loose rock riding on soil. It is the right call when the finished surface has to carry a vehicle, a trailer or a structure; when the subgrade has been shaped and you can get a compactor over it; and when traffic returns along the same wheel lines week after week, as it does on a drive that gets used twice a day.

It is also the right call when the top course is going on later. A compacted 21AA layer is what driveway gravel or asphalt is meant to sit on, and a paver apron wants the same treatment underneath.

Leave it in the catalogue when the job is drainage or bare feet

Those same binding fines are a liability anywhere you want water to run straight through. A perimeter drain, a downspout run or a curtain drain around a walkout basement wants open, washed stone, so look at #57 Stone or Drain Rock instead. A garden path or a dog run wants something finer and kinder underfoot, which is where Walkway Gravel or pea stone come in.

One more distinction worth holding onto. Recycled 21AA crushed concrete is common around here and people use the same number for it, but the material sold on this page is crushed limestone, not concrete. And 21AA is not 22A. They are separate MDOT Section 902 classes with different top sizes, and referring to a class designation is simply how material gets specified locally, not a stamp the storefront carries.

Three Michigan jobs, three different depths

A playground surface. 21AA goes down first as the compacted shelf, then the loose safety surfacing goes over it. The base has to stay flat through a thaw or the surfacing above it will pool. Figure a modest depth and a clean, level compaction pass.

An RV or boat parking pad. A pad holds concentrated weight in the same four footprints for months. Plan the layer thicker than you would for a walking surface, and keep the pad graded to shed meltwater instead of letting it stand under the tires.

A long rural lane. Lanes fail in patches, not all at once. The wet stretch where the lane crosses a swale or a run of clay needs more depth than the high ground either side of it. The site's own measuring guide puts landscape depths around 2 inches and drive depths around 4 inches; on soft clay in the southeast or a low hollow in a sandy outwash lot, plan deeper for that stretch and treat the number as your decision rather than a published spec.

The layer 21AA is supposed to disappear under

Left bare, a 21AA surface dusts in a dry July and the fines wash toward the low edge after a thunderstorm on a sloped moraine lot. Plenty of owners run it exposed on a lane and top it up every few seasons, and that is a fair trade for a lane. For a drive at the house it works better as the hidden layer with a surfacing course above it.

Season matters as much as depth. Compaction wants unfrozen ground, so the working window opens with the thaw and closes when the ground firms up in late fall, and it is shorter in the northern counties and the Upper Peninsula than it is down south. Frost laws limit heavy trucks on many state highways and county roads through the thaw, which is a scheduling fact worth planning around rather than fighting.

Working out a 12 by 40 boat pad and a 300 foot lane

Take the boat pad first, at 12 feet by 40 feet, and assume 6 inches of compacted 21AA.

• 12 x 40 = 480 square feet
• 6 inches is 0.5 feet, so 480 x 0.5 = 240 cubic feet
• 240 / 27 = 8.9 cubic yards

Now the lane, 300 feet long and 10 feet wide, at 4 inches.

• 300 x 10 = 3,000 square feet
• 4 inches is 0.333 feet, so 3,000 x 0.333 = 1,000 cubic feet
• 1,000 / 27 = 37.0 cubic yards

A playground shelf of 20 by 30 at 4 inches runs the same way and lands at 7.4 cubic yards. All three are hypothetical layouts rather than real projects. This site publishes about 3,000 lb per cubic yard for road base and crusher run, or 1.50 tons per yard, so as approximate figures the boat pad is 8.9 x 1.50 = 13.4 tons, the lane 37.0 x 1.50 = 55.5 tons and the playground shelf 7.4 x 1.50 = 11.1 tons.
