The ground a Michigan path has to cross changes over about forty feet. Near the Lake Michigan shore it is dune sand that a heel sinks into; a few counties east it is loam over till; down on the southeastern lake plain it is clay that holds meltwater in the low stretch until May. A path across any of those needs a surface that drains, sits firm underfoot and does not track indoors. Walkway gravel is graded crushed stone at three eighths of an inch, small enough to walk on comfortably and angular enough that it knits together rather than rolling away.

The cottage walk from the back door to the fire pit

That is the job this material gets bought for more than any other: the route people actually use, from a door or a drive to a fire pit ring, a shed, a dock path or a garden gate, on a property where a poured walk would look wrong and cost more than the job deserves. It handles the side-yard shortcut that has worn to mud, the strip between the house and the fence where the downspout discharges, and the gravel filling around concrete or flagstone steppers where grass refuses to grow.

The other regular use is edging rather than walking: a border between a patio and planted ground, where the gravel makes the change gradual and gives rain somewhere to go instead of sheeting off the paving.

How 3/8 inch crushed stone behaves on sand and on lake plain clay

On sandy west-side and northern lots, the subsoil takes water away fine. The problem is that loose sand gives the gravel nothing to key into, so a path laid straight on sand sinks in patches and disappears at the edges. Fabric and a firm edge matter more than depth there.

On flat southeastern clay, around Saginaw Bay and across the Thumb, the gravel itself drains but the ground under it does not. Water arrives in the thaw, sits at the boundary and turns the underside of the path to slurry, which is how gravel vanishes into the soil over two or three winters. The answer is a compacted base course before the surface goes down, shaped so the path sheds sideways into the beds either side rather than running the length of itself.

Frost is the constant. It reaches 42 inches under the Michigan Residential Code, and the heave that comes with it will move any path that has loose organic material trapped underneath it, which is the real reason a path should not be laid over turf.

Cutting the path, setting an edge, laying the fabric

Work the sequence rather than the calendar first. Strip the sod and the soft material along the route, because leaving it there is what makes a path settle unevenly. Shape the trench so the finished path sits at or slightly above the lawn, then put down the compacted base and run a plate over it. Lay landscape fabric over the base to keep the gravel and the soil separated and to slow weeds through the gaps. Set the edging before the stone goes in, not after: timber, steel or a run of stone, pinned properly, because a gravel path is only as tidy as its edge.

Then the season. Compaction needs unfrozen ground, so the window runs from the spring thaw into late fall, and it closes earlier in the Upper Peninsula and the northern Lower Peninsula than it does in the south. Building in October up north is a gamble with the first hard freeze.

Pea stone and stone screenings, judged on the same cottage path

Pea stone is the alternative most cottage owners consider, and it is lovely to look at, but it is rounded. Rounded stone rolls, so it moves under a foot, migrates out of the path edge and is hard work for a wheelbarrow or a garden cart. It is better in a play area or a dog run than on a route people use daily.

Stone screenings go the other way: fine crushed material with dust in it, which packs down almost solid and gives the firmest walking surface of the three. The trade is that it is dusty in a dry August, tracks indoors on wet boots and drains more slowly because those fines close the gaps. Plenty of paths here use screenings as the compacted layer with walkway gravel as the visible surface over it.

Where a 3/8 inch path stops working

Two jobs come up often and both are a mistake. A dry creek bed wants stone big enough to stay in place when water runs, so that is River Rock or, on a channel that genuinely moves in a thaw, RipRap. And a pole barn or equipment pad needs a dense-graded material that compacts and carries weight, which is 21AA limestone or 22A road gravel. A fire pit surround, on the other hand, is a genuine fit, so long as the ring itself is built of something non-combustible.

Working out a path to the fire pit ring

Say the path runs three feet wide and fifty-five feet long, with two inches of walkway gravel over a compacted base.

  • 3 x 55 = 165 square feet
  • 2 inches is 0.167 feet, so 165 x 0.167 = 27.6 cubic feet
  • 27.6 / 27 = 1.0 cubic yards

Now the gravel apron around the fire pit, a fourteen foot circle with a four foot ring in the middle left out.

  • Full circle: 3.14 x 7 x 7 = 153.9 square feet
  • The ring itself: 3.14 x 2 x 2 = 12.6 square feet
  • Gravelled area: 153.9 minus 12.6 = 141.3 square feet
  • At 2 inches: 141.3 x 0.167 = 23.6 cubic feet, so 23.6 / 27 = 0.9 cubic yards

Both figures are hypothetical layouts. This site publishes about 2,800 lb per cubic yard for driveway and walkway gravel, or 1.40 tons per yard, so as approximate figures the path is 1.0 x 1.40 = 1.4 tons and the fire pit apron 0.9 x 1.40 = 1.3 tons. The gravel calculator runs the same conversion, handles circles as well as rectangles, accepts up to five separate areas, works in inches of depth and offers a five percent addition for raking loss. Pick a date and a quantity on this page once the number looks right, and check that the truck has a clear run to a firm tipping spot before you set the date.
